When it happens, the screen displays gray with striped vertical lines. The GSoD emerged a few years back for desktops and laptops with ATI graphics cards and Catalyst drivers. If you’re getting a Gray Screen of Death, this is how you can fix it.

Steps to fix Gray Screen of Death errors on PC

1. The Catalyst 10.1 Hotfix Driver

ATI brought out a Catalyst 10.1 hotfix driver to resolve the GSoD for its cards. This hotfix fixes the intermittent gray screens for the ATI Radeon HD 5800 series graphics cards with Catalyst 10.1 drivers. So, if your video card is part of the ATI 5800 series, it might be worth checking this hotfix out. You can save it to Windows by pressing the Download Now button on this website. The Catalyst hotfix is compatible with 64 and 32-bit Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP platforms. — RELATED: How to update outdated drivers in Windows 10

2. Fully Uninstall the ATI Graphics Card Driver and update it

A completely fresh install of an updated ATI graphics card driver will probably fix the Gray Screen of Death. You should thoroughly remove the current video card driver by scanning for leftover ATI fragments with the Display Driver Uninstaller and CCleaner. You can download Display Driver Uninstaller from here, and open this page to save CCleaner’s installer to Windows. This is how you can fully uninstall the ATI graphics card driver and update it on Windows systems:

First, open the Control Panel and click Programs and Features to open the window shown in the shot below.

Select the AMD Catalyst Install Manager listed there and click the Change button. Click the Uninstall Manager option on the Catalyst Install Manager window, and select to remove ALL the AMD software components. You should be left with VGA drivers.

Next, reboot Windows in Safe Mode. In older Windows 7 desktops and laptops, you can do that by pressing F8 while Windows boots up. Open the Display Driver Uninstaller software by right-clicking its icon and selecting Run as administrator. Select AMD from the Selected graphics driver drop-down menu to clean any ATI fragments found.

Open CCleaner and press the Cleaner button. Then, select all the System check boxes, press the Run Cleaner button, and delete all items found.

Click CCleaner’s Registry button, select all the check boxes, press the Scan for issues button and then click Fix selected issues after the scan. Reboot Windows as you usually would without entering Safe Mode. Now you can install the latest driver for your ATI graphics card with AMD Driver Autodetect. Press the Download button on this page and then click Run to open the AutoDetect window.

The software automatically detects the best driver for your video card. Press the Download Now button to save the driver to Windows. Then, you can open the setup window to install the update driver.

The other thing you could do is return the graphics card to manufacturer if it’s still within its warranty period. However, the above fixes will probably address the Gray Screen of Death. For further AMD graphics card fixes, check out this Windows Report article.

3. Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter

If the problem persists, you can run the built-in Hardware and Devices troubleshooter from the Settings page. This tool will scan your hardware and repair any detected problems.

After running the troubleshooter, don’t forget to restart your computer. We hope you managed to fix this problem by using the solution listed above. If you came across other troubleshooting methods, feel free to list the steps to follow in the comments below. RELATED STORIES YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT:
