The computer models concerned are: Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion Notebook computers. Battery accessories and spares, pieces provided as replacements through support, are also concerned. The problem with these devices is that their batteries have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers. The company is urging customers to check whether their batteries are affected, and cease to use affected batteries immediately if so. To eliminate all risks, customers may continue to use their notebook computers without the battery installed. You can use HP’s Battery Program Validation Utility to check if your battery is affected. Validation using this utility takes less than 30 seconds. The company has also made public a list of battery bar code numbers for the batteries that may be affected:
6BZLU***** 6CGFK**** 6CGFQ**** 6CZMB**** 6DEMA**** 6DEMH**** 6DGAL***** 6EBVA*****
This piece of news comes out right as HP is gearing up to launch new devices that are true powerhouses. Unfortunately for the company, this news may influence the purchasing decision of potential buyers. HP’s Spectre X360 is one of the most popular laptops on the market and it would be interesting to see if buyers get cold feet following this news, or if they appreciate HP’s decision to recall potentially hazardous batteries and trust the company even more as a result.
